Meet the Artist

Karen Houghton Teeter is a Michigan artist inspired by wildlife, folklore, imagination, and the peaceful beauty of northern landscapes.
Karen’s love for art began at the age of six after watching her older sister take art classes. Growing up in a family with limited means, art supplies were often difficult to afford, but her passion for creativity continued through school where she discovered acrylic painting and quickly developed a love for expressive color and atmosphere.
Much of Karen’s artwork is inspired by the outdoors, the changing seasons, northern Michigan scenery, and the quiet beauty surrounding her home. The pond in front of her house, country roads, swamps, tamaracks, autumn landscapes, and the Upper Peninsula all influence the peaceful and emotional tone found throughout her paintings.
Animals also play an important role in her work. Her paintings often reflect the loyalty, comfort, and emotional connection she feels with animals, especially dogs. One of her most personal paintings, “Shadow,” was created to honor the deep bond she shares with her beloved dog and to preserve the memory of his short but meaningful life.
Karen is also drawn to folklore and mystery, particularly stories surrounding Bigfoot and other legendary creatures. Inspired in part by her brother’s fascination with Bigfoot and a lifelong love of stories, nature, and observation, her artwork blends imagination with atmosphere and emotional storytelling.
Rather than focusing purely on realism, Karen’s paintings are guided more by emotion, imagination, and feeling. She paints intuitively, allowing color, mood, and inspiration to shape each piece naturally.
After years of painting privately simply because it brought her happiness, Karen recently decided to begin sharing her artwork publicly after seeing the joy her paintings brought to her grandchildren and others around her.
Through Karen Houghton Teeter Art, she hopes her paintings bring people joy, peace, imagination, and emotional connection.
